An instant introduction to 25 vegetables in French. I like to share essential beginner French vocabulary that I can use in everyday talk with my young learners from the beginning of their French learning program. The key focus is on the definite article, both masculine and feminine, singular and plural, though I do use the set to start to compare these with the indefinite article, which I’ve found to be a really successful way of helping students embed grammatical concepts such as gender, implicitly, without the need for repeated explicit instruction.
We use the set not only when we’re introducing and practicing French vegetables, but also for developing French language skills and awareness in general. Students are able to familiarise themselves with how French words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. I don’t actually introduce 25 vegetables at once, but in my classroom decor, I generally have additional language to maximise students’ exposure to related vocabulary.
The vegetables are:
artichoke; asparagus; beetroot; broccoli; cabbage; carrots; cauliflower; celery; corn; cucumber; eggplants / aubergines; French / green beans; garlic; leeks; lettuce; mushrooms; onions; peas ; red peppers; yellow pepper; potatoes; sprouts; spinach; sweet potatoes; tomato
The flashcards / posters are 8.5 x 11 (A4) portrait size. There are two design formats to choose from - French flag, or plain without frame, to keep prep costs to a minimum, so 50 flashcards / posters in total. I always print on card stock and / or laminate my flashcards / posters, as they display much more effectively, and remain in excellent condition for years.

These Italian animals display posters / flashcards create a fabulous Italian look and feel in the learning environment. I’ve found that this also helps promote Italian as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of beginner learners of Italian. They introduce learners to a range of animals in Italian from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarise themselves with how*** Italian*** words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form.
There are 20 animals using the masculine and feminine indefinite article, which again is a great opportunity to begin to compare Italian to English. I’ve chosen a couple of insects and birds, as well as animals that feature in very popular stories, such as orso and lupo. Looking at language, and the ways it works, either similarly to, or differently from their first language, helps learners become implicitly aware of linguistic concepts in both languages, which I’ve found to be really useful for both current and later learning.
The animals are:

Use them as flashcards to introduce and practice language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating.
There are two sets of 20 9.5x11 (A4) portrait posters, each with a different background for you to choose from: Italian flag or animal footprint, so 40 flashcards / posters in total. I always laminate my posters / flashcards as they hang a lot better, are easier to manipulate as flashcards, and definitely last in great condition for years.

SPANISH FOR CHILDREN BEGINNER SPANISH PRIMARY SPANISH NUMBERS 0-21 LOS NÚMEROS EN ESPAÑOL 0-21 WORKSHEET I like to have sets of super simple worksheets that I can give to my young beginner learners of Spanish, not only when they’re new to the target vocabulary, but also for refreshing and revising language they’ve learned some time ago. Students can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image.
The worksheet is useful for consolidating both number vocabulary and spelling, and students really enjoy testing their recall. This kind of worksheet is really versatile: I use for sub lessons, as starters, plenaries, five-minute refreshers and home learning activities.
There are two versions to choose from - color, which makes the worksheet really visually appealing, or BW, which saves prep expense, and is also a popular activity with younger students, who like to colour as they read aloud, write and practice their Spanish numbers.

Children glue them into their Spanish vocabulary books, or file them in their Spanish vocabulary folders with other vocabulary lists, which gives them an accessible and useful Spanish vocabulary reference bank for both class and home learning.

FRENCH CONVERSATION STARTERS #1
ADVANCED BEGINNER FRENCH CONVERSATION STARTERS This set of French conversation starters features 100 starters in question format, suitable for advanced beginner French students. Speaking is a language skills that learners tend to find very challenging, and increased engagement with language that requires them to both reproduce language they are already familiar with, and to be creative with that language in order to produce new language is integral to successful language learning.
The questions focus largely on the present tense, with some examples of the past tenses. I include tenses we may not have formally covered, as the activity is not solely about practising language, but also about actively learning it. I encourage students to look for cues and clues in the questions themselves, and this certainly enables them to engage with new or unknown language successfully, and to progress in their learning.
Each card has an image: some of these are specific visual prompts to help students infer meaning; some are more generic images. I do use images as much as possible with this kind of activity, not only to provide the prompt, but also to add to the visual appeal of it, which is a real motivator for learning.
I remind students that it is not necessary to tell the truth - the purpose is to create and produce accurate and realistic language. Students can prepare their responses in as much detail as possible on the accompanying planning sheet, remembering that these are conversation starters, so that once they have responded, they should then say something to keep the conversation going.
As a whole-group activity, distribute the cards amongst your students, one or several. Ideally, they should walk around the classroom, asking questions, and swapping cards. For pair or small-group work, students can work in a designated area. This really helps them focus closely on the language, and helps learners who are slightly less confident working with a larger group.

25 high-frequency German separable verbs, 150 conjugation questions, 3 differentiated challenges, answer keys ideal for advanced German students who have a sound understanding of conjugation and tense in German, are working regularly with the notion of a range of tenses and mood in German, and have a solid grasp of verbs that are conjugated with either haben or sein in the relevant tenses. It’s actually really useful to introduce the future perfect tense in German fairly closely with the conditional perfect tense, as the patterns are identical, other than the auxiliary tense, and it allows students to compare and contrast the tenses, and to practise both fairly simultaneously - in my experience, students do not confuse or mix up the tenses when they’re learning and using them together… The focus is on common separable prefixes such as ab, an, aus, ein, um and zu. Prefixes such as entlang and entgegen are not included in this particular collection of verbs.
The resource has the following structure:

Grammar books are not consistent with grammatical terminology, so in this context, the conditional perfect is I would have opened or I would have got up for example. I’ve used hätte & past participle or wäre & past participle as ich würde aufgemacht haben or ich würde aufgestanden sein are no longer commonly used in the way that ich hätte aufgemacht or ich wäre aufgestanden are for example. The conjugation is structured in the same way as the Konjunktiv II Plusquamperfekt, which is often called the pluperfect subjunctive in English grammatical terminology, though of course, the usage is different.

Sopas de Letras are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This freebie features a Spanish fruits word search with answer key, perfect for beginner Spanish learners of all grades. The fruits include masculine, feminine, singular and plural, with a blend of definite and indefinite articles - this really helps learners think a little more creatively about language, and their new Spanish vocabulary - they may learn la manzana, and it’s useful to give students opportunity to think about grammatical concepts, and how la becomes una for example.
There is a Spanish to German grid, where learners are prompted with the Spanish word, and look for it in Spanish in the grid. For additional consolidation, the grid also features a German word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test. Learners can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on the grid. Having a good bilingual dictionary to hand is also a good idea, as this provides a further focus on developing literacy in both Spanish and German, and facilitates learner independence.
There is an answer key grid for the search grid, so that learners can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. Answer keys are really essential - they offer learners an additional opportunity to engage with language, develop more independence in their learning, and students genuinely enjoy ‘correcting’ their own, and particularly each others’ work. They’re a great teacher time-saver too, which is always a good thing!
The word search is in landscape format, as this mirrors the common direction of reading and writing from left to right in both Spanish and German. I’ve found this to be the best format for beginner language learners, ensuring language is very clear and accessible. This kind of activity is really versatile too - I use for sub lessons, as starters, refreshers, plenaries or fun-time fillers at any time during the school year, as well as when I’m focusing on fruits in Spanish.

Twenty fruits in French, with both words and pictures - I like to give visual vocabulary lists to my Primary French Immersion learners, as they can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image. Children glue them into their French vocabulary books, or file them in their French vocabulary folders with other vocabulary lists, which gives them an accessible and useful French reference bank for both class and home learning.
We also discuss which fruits we know and like, and those we would like to try. Children like to create their own word and picture dictionary lists, adding to it as they learn more. I don’t necessarily have all the fruits in my teaching and learning plan, but it’s always a good idea to give children opportunity to engage with a broader range of words and sounds, which they begin to absorb quite naturally. The fruits focus on the definite article, either singular or plural, which is a great for promoting discussion about grammatical concepts in French, specifically gender of French nouns.

Word searches are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word, practicing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features ten differentiated word searches, focusing on Numbers 0-100, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. The searches offer a really useful learning opportunity - enabling learners to engage with the target vocabulary, but also aligning with cross-curricular learning - working on reading, writing, spelling, numeracy and French language skills in general.
Learners are able to identify which direction words are located in within the grid by referring to the arrow key. As they move through the grids, their language skills are challenged in a range of ways - from straightforward vocabulary searching, to gap-fill, scrambled letters and more complex questions, which feature mathematical language in French. Hyphens are important in French numbers, and the grids feature these quite clearly, in order to ensure that learners can practice this aspect of language.
There is an answer grid for each word search, so that learners can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. For me, answer keys are essential, as they not only provide learners with another opportunity to engage with language, but they also help them develop more independence in their learning. They’re also a great teacher time-saver - a real bonus!

These 180 task cards are perfect for developing French language skills in general, as well as for practicing and revising how to tell time in French - each of the three sets has 60 cards, divided into two sets of 30 questions, full answer key and a recording sheet. The cards have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling, and really help students develop more independence in their learning, moving away from more teacher-led tasks and activities.
Task cards are really versatile too - I use them not only when we’re focusing on the target vocabulary and structures, but throughout the year for sub lessons, and as starters and refreshers. The goal is not simply to learn and practice how to tell time in French, but also to enjoy working with language, and to feel confident about doing so. I use these cards not only with my elementary French learners, but also my older beginner French learners.
The questions are a straightforward introduction to, and consolidation of, a range of analog clock times for both beginner French students and those who have already been introduced to the basics of telling time in French. They’re also a good introduction to working and learning with task cards - I generally work with numbers quite quickly with my beginner language students, and move on to task card activities as soon as I can, so that they can develop independent and collaborative learning skills.
There are two questions: Quelle heure est-il ? with a particular clock face, and students write the response on their recording sheet or in their workbooks. The second question is Vrai ou faux ? and students write either vrai or faux - where the answer is faux, remind students to write the correct time for additional consolidation.
Set 1 focuses on o’clock & half past the hour, Set 2 on quarter to & quarter past the hour and Set 3 on a range of analog clock times. I print each set out on different color paper so that they’re easily identifiable. The cards are numbered 1-60 in words, so students should recap those numbers before they work with the task cards. The question card template enables students to apply their knowledge of language and time creatively and practically, which is an essential element of successful language learning. My students really enjoy creating cards for each other, so it’s a really popular activity too.
Each set comprises the following non-editable files:
60 question cards, 6 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper. Print, laminate and cut out. Depending on how long you want the activity to last for, choose a particular number of cards per small group of students, and place them in a tin, bowl or small box so that students can easily select a card, and then replace at the end of the activity. You can simply place all the cards in the bowl/box and let students work their way through, either in a single lesson, or across a series of lessons.
2-page answer recording sheet - I tend to use recording sheets for more formal assessment purposes, and have my students use their class workbooks to note their answers when we’re using the task cards as a more general learning activity
2-page answer key - answer keys are an integral element to the learning activity. They offer students and additional opportunity to engage with language, and develop more independence in their learning. They’re also a great teacher time-saver, which is always a good thing!

These 60 task cards are perfect for developing French language skills in general, as well as for practicing and revising how to tell time in French - there are 60 cards, divided into two sets of 30 questions, full answer key and a recording sheet. The cards have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling, and really help students develop more independence in their learning, moving away from more teacher-led tasks and activities.
The questions are a straightforward introduction to, and consolidation of, a range of analog times - I generally work with numbers quite quickly with my beginner language students, and move on to task card activities as soon as I can, so that they can develop independent and collaborative learning skills.
There are two questions:Quelle heure est-il ? with a particular clock face, and students write the response on their recording sheet or in their workbooks. The second question is Vrai ou faux ? and students write either vrai or faux - where the answer is faux, remind students to write the correct time for additional consolidation. The cards are numbered 1-60 in words, so students should recap those numbers before they work with the challenge cards.
The question card template enables students to apply their knowledge of language and time creatively and practically too, which is an essential element of successful language learning.
The set comprises the following non-editable files:

The games and activities are a really successful alternative to more traditional ‘vocabulary drilling’ exercises.
The Reference, Recall & Write book has 18 pages. It includes an alphabetical Italian-English reference list of all 99 verbs. Students find this really useful as a learning support resource, and it comes in very handy for quick vocabulary quizzes too. The Recall and Write challenges help students familiarise themselves with, and really embed, the range of verbs in the set, and also get used to reading, writing and spelling in Italian. It’s also a great way of developing literacy skills in Italian. The challenges can be done several times, as students simply cover previous responses, so they definitely get a lot of use from a single workbook.
There are three differentiated recall challenges:
Written Recall Challenge One students write the English verbs from an Italian prompt, with all the verbs in alphabetical order, Italian-English.

These French animals display posters / flashcards create a fabulous French look and feel in the learning environment. I’ve found that this also helps promote French as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of beginner learners of French. They introduce learners to a range of animals in French from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarize themselves with how French words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form.
Students definitely notice the different words for a/an, and ask why some animals are un, and others are une. I’ve used this as a useful prompt to introduce the concept of gender.
There are 20 animals using the masculine and feminine indefinite article, which is a great opportunity to begin to compare French to English. I’ve chosen a couple of insects and birds, as well as animals that feature in very popular stories, such as ours and loup. Looking at language, and the ways it works, either similarly to, or differently from their first language, helps learners become implicitly aware of linguistic concepts in both languages, which I’ve found to be really useful for both current and later learning.

Use them as flashcards to introduce and practice language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating.
